Biblical Context
They are God's servants freed from Egypt; they must not be sold as bondmen, and rulers should not govern with rigour but with reverence for God.
Neville's Inner Vision
In this passage, the Israelites are not merely people but states of consciousness freed from a mental Egypt of lack and limitation. The 'servants' are the facets of your being—memories, desires, impulses—now liberated from old tyrannies. Do not sell them as bondmen; they belong to the I AM within and are to be governed with care, not cruelty. The injunction not to rule with rigour is your inner governor learning mercy, justice, and reverence toward the God-within—the I AM. To fear thy God is to honor the I AM, to treat all inner states as sacred instruments through which you imagine and unfold your life. When you hold this reverence, your imagination becomes aligned with the truth that you are the creator of your experience. The bondage you fear is a belief; once you acknowledge your oneness with the I AM, oppression dissolves and your inner land of freedom emerges as a felt reality in your now.
Practice This Now
Imaginative Act: Close your eyes and envision an inner state you have treated as a captive or servant. Silently affirm: I am the I AM; I govern with love and justice, not harshness. Revise the scene by acknowledging these states as sacred attendants and feel the reverent power of your inner governor shaping reality.
