Biblical Context
Israel retreats in battle; Benjamin presses the attack, killing about thirty. Then a flame and pillar of smoke rise from the city, signaling a shift that mirrors an inner turning point.
Neville's Inner Vision
Observe the warriors as images within your consciousness. The retreat of Israel and the Benjamites' initial advantage reveal a state you have accepted as real. The pillar of flame and the rising smoke from the city is not a punishment but a signal to wake the mind. In Neville's sense, Providence is your I AM, always present, showing you what your thinking has produced. The outward scene shifts because you have, in essence, turned your attention heavenward; the inner fire returns you to a place of choice. The flame stands for awareness, the city’s smoke for old conditions burning away. When you notice a reversal in your life, do not lament but recognize this as guidance: you may revise the scene by affirming that you govern the moment by the state you assume. Say to yourself, I am awareness, I am the image of my world, and I affect the visible by the state I entertain. The sign is given so you may judge inwardly and align with your higher self, allowing the inner flame to guide steps you take.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and assume the state: I am the awareness that governs the scene; feel it real. Then revise the outer narrative by affirming the inner flame has risen and is guiding your next move.
