Biblical Context
Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of the towns, allowing Canaanites to dwell in the land; later Israel taxed them instead of utterly driving them out.
Neville's Inner Vision
Judges 1:27-28 speaks to your inner landscape. The inhabitants are the persistent habits, fears, and loyalties that have not been wholly displaced by your growing awareness. When Manasseh failed to drive them out, the land remained with these inner tenants; when you became strong in the I AM, you then placed them in tribute—acknowledging their presence without banishing them entirely. But the true sovereignty Neville teaches is not a compromise where old states are allowed to rule the land by permission; it is a conscious reversal: you, the awareness, command every corner of your mind. The Canaanites, those stubborn residues, vanish not by struggle but by your decision that only the I AM rules this field. By dwelling in the truth that you are the sole ruler, you lift the entire nation into holiness and separation: nothing untrue can share your land. The moment you accept that you are the sovereignty behind every thought and feeling, you prevent the re-emergence of old powers. Your present awareness becomes the law that renders all else powerless yet harmless.
Practice This Now
Imaginative Act: Assume the I AM as sovereign over your mind and revise the inner map; declare, 'There is no room for any thought that does not serve my divine life.' Then breathe into the feeling of that sovereignty until your mind feels unoccupied by the old tenants.
