Inner Covenant of Trust

Joshua 9:7-11 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Joshua 9 in context

Scripture Focus

7And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?
8And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?
9And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
10And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.
11Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.
Joshua 9:7-11

Biblical Context

Israelites question the Hivites about a treaty; the Hivites claim to be servants from a far country and speak of the LORD's fame to win a league with them.

Neville's Inner Vision

Here, the scene is not about geography but a negotiation within consciousness. The men of Israel mirror a state of awareness that doubts appearances and asks, 'Who are ye, and from whence come ye?' The Hivite claim—that they come from a far country because of the name of the LORD thy God—represents how a desired state approaches us, naming itself by the word of God, hoping to be accepted. The 'league' is not a political contract but a covenant of belief; the demand to victuals and to go meet them shows how we feed a mental image until it seems real. Joshua’s query, 'Who are ye?' invites a conscious check: what is the source of this voice? In Neville’s terms, the truth is always within, and the outer event is a movement of consciousness. The lesson is to not sign with any belief that would counterfeit your true self; instead, align with the I AM, the awareness in you, and treat every apparent appearance as a movement to be revised into trust. Your inner covenant with God is your ongoing state of faith, not a reaction to appearances.

Practice This Now

Imaginative_act: Assume the inner saying, 'I am in covenant with my higher self now,' and feel its reality as you breathe. Revise doubt by affirming inwardly that the truth of God’s name is the truth of your awareness, and act from that certainty.
