Inner Altar of Judgment and Worship
Joshua 8:29-31 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read Joshua 8 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
It records the execution of the king of Ai and a memorial heap, followed by an altar built to the LORD with offerings. It points to judgment, devotion, and living by the holy law.
Neville's Inner Vision
In the scene I hear the I AM addressing the old self as a mere belief. The king of Ai, hanged on a tree until eventide, is the ego I once worshiped—an identity I must dissolve in consciousness. When the sun sets and the body is carried away, I bury that memory in the earth of my mind and raise a heap of stones as a fixed sign that I have chosen to remember differently. Joshua’s altar on Mount Ebal represents a restart within: a vow to worship the LORD God of Israel through the inner law, not by force or iron tools. The altar of whole stones, unlifted by iron, signals alignment with pure consciousness and the immutable Principle that governs my life. The burnt offerings and peace offerings symbolize gratitude and harmony—an inner worship that sanctifies my days. When I recognize myself as the I AM, the outer world follows that inner order, for imagination is the hands, and I am the mind that commands reality.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and behold the old self hanging on a tree at eventide; let the memory melt into a heap of stones. Then picture yourself erecting an inner altar on a hill of awareness and offering praise and harmony to the I AM.
