Inner Covenant, Inner Land
Joshua 23:12-16 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read Joshua 23 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
The passage warns that if the people return to surrounding nations and form alliances, the Lord will stop driving out those powers, making them snares that bring hardship and exile from the land.
Neville's Inner Vision
Think of the land as your present state of consciousness. The 'remnant of these nations' are lingering habits of fear, doubt, and old identities. To 'go back' and cleave unto them is to imagine yourself not already possessed by the I AM. The 'marriages with them' are identifications with those thoughts; when you 'go in unto them, and they to you,' you compromise your inner covenant and invite disorder into your inner kingdom. The verse says the LORD will no more drive out those nations; in your inner work, this means your will to renew must arise from within; if you cling to the past, your inner God withdraws, and you are left with snares, traps, and thorns—the very sensations of separation from your true land. Yet notice the line: not one thing hath failed of all the good things the LORD spake concerning you; your divine promises remain when you align with the I AM. The anger is kindled when you insert other gods—your false identities—between you and your true self. The remedy is simple: return to your covenant by assuming the I AM as your complete, governing presence.
Practice This Now
Practice: Sit in stillness and declare 'I AM' as the governing presence. Then revise one lingering habit by affirming: 'I release all remnants of fear and separateness; I am land and promise here and now.'
