City Of Refuge Within
Joshua 20:5-6 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read Joshua 20 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
It speaks of a city of refuge where an unwitting killer is protected from the avenger until judgment; after the high priest's death, he may return to his own city and home.
Neville's Inner Vision
Within Joshua’s passage you are invited to inhabit a city of refuge inside your own consciousness. The avenger of blood is fear pursuing you; the slayer is the old self that acted unwittingly and hated no one beforetime. In this inner sanctuary you are protected not by external law but by the unshakable I AM awareness that never leaves you. Standing before the congregation for judgment represents facing the inner tribunal of your own being, where guilt is acknowledged and transmuted by understanding rather than punishment. The death of the high priest signals the passing of former identities—when that priest dies, you release old patterns and the mind is free to return to its true home. You come back to your city, carrying the calm of the sanctuary into daily life; the outward laws fade as your inward state expands. Mercy and justice are not distant mandates but alive in your steady, loving recognition of what you are now realizing: you are safe in the I AM you already are.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes, breathe, and assume, I now dwell in the inner city of refuge. The avenger cannot reach me; the old self dies, and I return to my true home.
