John 8:56-59 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read John 8 in context

Scripture Focus

56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
57Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
59Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.
John 8:56-59

Biblical Context

Jesus declares Abraham rejoiced to see his day and that he is timelessly present as 'I am'; the crowd responds with stones, and Jesus disappears through the crowd.

Neville's Inner Vision

Imagine that Abraham stands for your faith—the deep covenant of your mind. His joy at Jesus' day is your inner gladness when you awaken to your Christ-day here and now. The claim 'Before Abraham was, I am' states that the I AM—the one infinite consciousness—was, is, and always will be your true self, seen in this present moment. You are not reaching forward into time; time is an inward movement of awareness, and your awareness is timeless. The stones cast by the Jews symbolize the old beliefs that require proof or status; when you identify with the I AM, these judgments lose their power, and you pass through the midst of them as if unseen. By abiding as the I AM, you move through the outer temple of form and discover that the day you seek is already here in consciousness. Your inner day of Christ is not an external event but a revival of your own remembered truth, already true.

Practice This Now

For five minutes, assume the state of Abraham—joyful belief in your day—and feel the I AM as your present identity, as if the day is here now.
