The Inner Covenant of Love

John 15:12-17 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read John 15 in context

Scripture Focus

12This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
13Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
16Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.
17These things I command you, that ye love one another.
John 15:12-17

Biblical Context

Jesus commands loving one another as he loves you, and calls you friends, not servants. He says true love involves laying down yourself for others and bearing fruit that remains.

Neville's Inner Vision

In this passage the outer command to love points to an inner state: you are already loved and empowered in your I AM. When you acknowledge that your awareness is the field in which relationships are formed, love becomes not an achievement but your natural posture. 'Greater love' becomes your capacity to surrender the old self's demands for the new self's willingness to be used by your Father within. You are not separated from Him; you are His chosen friend, and all that the Father reveals to you flows through your consciousness. To lay down your life for your friends is to release competitive self-claims and to let the image of God around and through you define your actions. The idea that you will ask in the name of Jesus and receive is an invitation to assume the state in which your desires are already granted in consciousness; fruit that remains is the enduring results of abiding in that state. See, the command to love and the promise of answered prayer are two facets of one inner conversion: you shift your inner vision until what you seek appears as your own realized state.

Practice This Now

Imaginative act: Close your eyes and assume the state 'I am Christ's friend,' then revise a situation by feeling that you have already received what you seek, and let your actions flow from that inner assurance.
