Foot Washing: Inner Cleansing of Grace
John 13:6-9 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read John 13 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
Jesus offers a cleansing that reaches the heart of conduct; Peter resists, thinking humility means withdrawal. Yet when grace is accepted, true fellowship with the Christ within is opened.
Neville's Inner Vision
John 13:6-9 encodes a scripture of the inner journey. Peter's resistance is not rebellion against a man washing feet, but a state of mind clinging to what it thinks is dignity. Jesus answers with a paradox: what I do you know not now but you shall know hereafter. In Neville's language, the act of washing is the inner cleansing of consciousness by the I AM, a grace that touches every corner of your self image. The feet stand for daily movement in life; the hands and head show the reach of your thoughts and actions. When Peter protests, he is clinging to a separate self; by acknowledging the need to be washed, he yields to unity with the Christ within. The phrase If I wash thee not thou hast no part with me becomes a symbolic invitation: you cannot share in the consciousness of Christ while you refuse the cleansing of ego and habit. Humility is not servile; it is recognition that you are already loved and aligned with grace. Purity and integrity arise as you allow grace to revise your sense of self, dissolving resistance and restoring reconciliation with the I AM.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and imagine Jesus as your higher self gently washing your feet; feel the release of resistance and affirm, I am fully washed and one with the Christ within.
