The Voice In The Wilderness
John 1:19-28 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
John 1:19-28 records the questioning of John the Baptist, his denial of being the Christ, and his declaration that he is the voice preparing the way for the Lord.
Neville's Inner Vision
John is not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet; he is the function of consciousness that clears the path. When the priests and Levites ask 'Who art thou?' the answer 'I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness' reveals the inner posture: identity comes not from titles, but from the act of awakening. The 'one among you' who is not known is the Self, the I AM that stands near but unseen in the usual script. Baptism with water symbolizes outward ritual, while the inner baptism is the awareness that allows movement from bondage to freedom. Humility invites the true Presence to reveal itself; the speaker must reduce the ego's claims to make room for the greater, and in that space the Lord is made manifest in consciousness. Thus John's role is prophecy in action: he points you to your own inner visitor, the Christ within, by refusing to claim the role of Christ himself. In your own life, the practice is to cultivate the stance of 'the voice' and let the path become straight through awareness.
Practice This Now
Practice: close your eyes and assume the state of 'the voice' clearing the inner wilderness; quietly affirm, 'I am the voice that makes straight the way of the Lord in my mind,' and feel the path of awareness becoming clear.
