Biblical Context
John 1:1-5 presents the Word as the pre-existent, divine source with God, through whom all things were made. It shows life as the light within every person, shining in darkness, which darkness cannot comprehend.
Neville's Inner Vision
Imagine the Word not as a distant syllable but as your own I AM, the restless creative impulse that stands with God in the beginning of every moment. In this sense, 'in the beginning was the Word' means the first and only cause you acknowledge, the state of awareness from which all experiences arise. When it is said that all things were made by Him, know that every event, every form you perceive, is a movement of your inner state, fashioned by attention and belief. 'In Him was life; and the life was the light of men' becomes, for you, the truth that your inner life is luminous—your awareness radiates as light that gives shape to perception. The line 'the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not' suggests that in the moments of seeming confusion, your awareness does not allow darkness to define you; the light of your true self remains, even if not yet recognized by the dream. Practice the revision: assume the state of complete awareness now, and feel the inner Word animating every seen and unseen thing.
Practice This Now
Imaginative Act: Sit in stillness and revise a present limitation by saying, 'In me is the Word—the I AM who lights every moment,' and feel that inner Light expanding. Let that expansion soften darkness and reveal the truth of awareness here.
