Inner Sabbath, City Gates

Jeremiah 17:24-27 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Jeremiah 17 in context

Scripture Focus

24And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith the LORD, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the sabbath day, but hallow the sabbath day, to do no work therein;
25Then shall there enter into the gates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and this city shall remain for ever.
26And they shall come from the cities of Judah, and from the places about Jerusalem, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the plain, and from the mountains, and from the south, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meat offerings, and incense, and bringing sacrifices of praise, unto the house of the LORD.
27But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.
Jeremiah 17:24-27

Biblical Context

The passage calls to diligently keep the Sabbath, promising that Jerusalem will endure and blessing will flow when burdens are laid down; disobedience invites judgment and fire.

Neville's Inner Vision

Beloved, the words are not about a distant city, but about the city you carry within. To 'diligently hearken' is to attend to the whisper of I AM, to lay aside the burdened thoughts that surge through the gates of attention. The Sabbath is a state of pause, a sacred moment when you do no mental work but rest in awareness. When you honor that inner sabbath, the gates swing open to bring in the rulers of your inner kingdom—the kingly ideas, disciplined faculties, and love that sits on the throne of your own David. These entered states ride in on the chariots of imagination and carry offerings of praise to the house of the Lord inside you. The city endures because you keep the channel clear, not by outward ritual but by inner fidelity. If you neglect the pause, a fire is kindled in the gates—the fever of restless thought that devours the palaces of Jerusalem within and cannot be quenched. Your practice is simple: assent to a moment of sacred stillness, envisioning your life governed by that still, ruling I AM, and let imagination confirm it as true here and now.

Practice This Now

Imaginative act: For a few minutes, enter the inner sabbath—rest in being, not doing—assume that you are the city whose gates are open to divine kings. Revise any burdens as non-essential and feel-the-truth that I AM governs.
