Biblical Context
James 4:7-10 invites a turning of the will toward God: submit to the divine I AM, resist ego and fear, draw near to God, purify actions and motives, mourn attachments, and humble yourself so that life lifts you up from within.
Neville's Inner Vision
In this passage the narrative is your inner state. God is the I AM that you are, the perpetual awareness in which all images appear. To submit to God is to yield to that higher state of consciousness; to resist the devil is to refuse the old, fear-based image and let it fade as you hold the new vision. Draw nigh to God and He draws near, not as a distant event, but as your own attention becoming still and aligned with the life that you already are. Cleansing your hands and purifying your hearts means acting with integrity and clearing motive, banishing double-mindedness, and choosing a single, unwavering sense of truth. The injunction to be afflicted, to mourn and weep, is the shedding of attachments to appearances; humility is the path by which your inner self is exalted. When you hold this alignment, the lifted state is not future but present—God lifting you up from within, lifting your entire life to reflect your true inward state.
Practice This Now
Tonight, close your eyes and declare, 'I am one with the I AM; I submit to God now.' Then imagine yourself already lifted, and carry that feeling into your day.
