Biblical Context
The Lord promises a sign: a virgin will conceive and bear a son named Immanuel; he will eat to learn to refuse evil and choose the good, and before the child can do this, the land will be forsaken by both kings.
Neville's Inner Vision
In this vision, God is not distant but the I AM rising as your awareness. The sign is a state realized within you: Immanuel, 'God with us,' is the presence of awakening now. The virgin’s conception signifies receptivity to a new line of thought; the child who will know to refuse the evil and choose the good is your growing discernment, the moral consciousness born from that inner state. Butter and honey symbolize the simple nourishment that sustains you as you cultivate right perception and affirm that you will say yes to good and no to fear. The clause about the child before knowing this marks the thinning of outer appearances: as your inner state stabilizes, external kingdoms—fearful conditions—lose their grip because they are projections of your old, unrefined state. Thus this passage invites you to accept Immanuel as your own consciousness here and now, and to let the inner sign govern how you think, act, and relate to the world.
Practice This Now
Practice: Assume you are Immanuel—God with you—within your mind right now, and feel the discernment growing; for today, revise any sense of separation by affirming, 'I am the sign; I refuse the evil and choose the good.'
