Inner Renewal in Isaiah 61:3-4

Isaiah 61:3-4 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Isaiah 61 in context

Scripture Focus

3To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
4And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.
Isaiah 61:3-4

Biblical Context

Isaiah 61:3-4 speaks of turning mourning into beauty and joy into praise, a reversal of despair. It promises that the people will rebuild ruined places as a result of this inner transformation.

Neville's Inner Vision

Within your consciousness, Zion is the awareness in which I AM reveals itself. To mourn in Zion signals a state you can revise by turning to the feeling that you are already renewed. The ashes you hold vanish as you assume beauty. The oil of joy for mourning appears when you linger in a scene of joy until it feels natural. The garment of praise is your voluntary attire in the mind—when heaviness comes, you respond with praise as if it is your immediate mood. You are called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, meaning your inner nature is rooted in divine life and bears fruit. They shall build the old wastes; they shall raise up former desolations—this is your inner construction project, begun in consciousness and reflected outward as you persist in this new state. The desolations of many generations fade as your sense of self expands and the world bends to your inner conviction.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes, assume you are already the planting of the LORD, and feel the joy as real as breath. See in your imagination the old wastes rising as you dwell in this new state.
