Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
God declares that the king of Assyria will not enter Jerusalem; he will return the way he came, for God will defend the city for His own sake and for David's sake.
Neville's Inner Vision
Consider the city as your present state of consciousness. The king of Assyria is the fear or limitation you entertain; the LORD'S word that he shall not come in is a statement of your inner reality: your I AM can close the gates against every thought that would invade your peace. The arrow, the shields, the bank against the city are merely outward forms of pressure arising in imagination, not laws of your being. When you grasp that the defense is of the city for God's own sake and for David's sake, you recognize that the David within you—the faithful, remembering nature of your true self—exists to remind you of covenant and wholeness. The return by the same way speaks of a reversal of thought: thoughts that arise as fear are shown their origin and can be dissolved by the steady confidence of awareness. Your duty is not to chase men or armies but to turn within and claim the steady protection of the I AM, which makes all outer threats moot by preserving the inner state of peace.
Practice This Now
Imaginative act: Assume now the stance, 'The Lord defends this city.' In present-tense, visualize a circle of light surrounding your inner space and feel the fear dissolve as the sense of safety rises.
