The I Am Defense Within

Isaiah 31:1-5 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Isaiah 31 in context

Scripture Focus

1Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the LORD!
2Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of them that work iniquity.
3Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down, and they all shall fail together.
4For thus hath the LORD spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them: so shall the LORD of hosts come down to fight for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof.
5As birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it.
Isaiah 31:1-5

Biblical Context

The passage condemns reliance on Egypt and military might; true defense comes from the LORD who defends Zion. It proclaims that the LORD will arise against the evildoers and protect Jerusalem.

Neville's Inner Vision

Read as a state of consciousness, Isaiah's warning shifts from outward alliances to inner alignment. Egypt and the chariots symbolize trusted supports of the small self, the ego’s need to grip power through forms. Yet God’s WORD remains faithful; not because the wheel of fate favors you, but because your awareness—the Holy One of Israel, your I AM—is the living power behind every event. When you look to the external, you see a landscape of flesh and noise; when you turn within, you hear the lion of Judah roaring in defense of your true mountain, Zion. The LORD of hosts does not negotiate with fear, he acts from the light of your inner presence. The outward army will fail when faced with the deeper truth that spirit is sovereign and matter is only its appearance. So you are invited to dwell in that inner reality, to know that you are not at the mercy of circumstances but are supported by the indwelling divine activity you call I AM. In this posture, salvation is a present experience, not a distant event.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and assume the I AM is defending you now. Feel a shield of divine light surrounding you as you rest in present awareness.
