Genesis 4:6-7 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Genesis 4 in context

Scripture Focus

6And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen?
7If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
Genesis 4:6-7

Biblical Context

Genesis 4:6-7 presents an inner dialogue: God asks Cain about his anger and fallen mood, urging him to choose what is good, and warns that sin lies at the door and would rule if he yields.

Neville's Inner Vision

Cain's anger and downcast mood are not external facts but states of consciousness you carry within. The LORD represents the I AM within, asking why you cling to fear rather than the good you intend. If you do well, you are not merely approved by others; you are aligned with your true self. If you do not do well, sin lies at the door—not as a distant power but as a subtle pattern of thinking that would dominate you if you yield to it. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him: the 'desire' is the impulse for fear to govern action; you, however, as the I AM, have the authority to rule over that impulse. The teaching is that present mood and choices shape your results; mastery comes by shifting to the state of the awareness that already holds the good you seek. When you inhabit that state, right action follows, and the door to sin remains closed to your attention.

Practice This Now

Imaginative Act: In a moment of stillness, declare to yourself, 'I am the I AM; I choose well and I rule over the impulse to react in anger.' Then visualize turning away from the door of temptation and feel the certainty of mastery settling into your heart.
