Scripture Focus

12And his brethren went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.
13And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.
14And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
15And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?
16And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.
17And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.
Genesis 37:12-17

Biblical Context

Joseph is sent by his father to verify his brothers' welfare, travels through Hebron and Shechem to Dothan, and is eventually found by a guiding figure. The passage highlights obedience to a divine mission and the call toward inner unity.

Neville's Inner Vision

Within Genesis 37:12-17, the landscape of places becomes the landscape of states in consciousness. The brothers are the scattered faculties of your mind; Shechem, Hebron, and Dothan are inner dispositions you pass through to test whether your inner flock is cared for. Israel’s command to Joseph to seek them is the I AM calling your awareness to audit its own unity. When Joseph says Here am I, you hear the readiness to serve the inner mission. The journey from Hebron into the field mirrors your movement from identity of self to the field of action where outcomes are formed. The wandering youth is not wandering aimlessly; he represents attention seeking alignment. The man who meets him and says They are departed hence echoes the inner guidance that points you to the next destination. Go, see whether it be well with thy brethren becomes a command to inquire into the health of every part, asking, Is it well with the inner unity? The final discovery in Dothan signifies the moment when the inner parts are gathered into harmony and your purpose becomes manifest.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and assume you are Joseph, moving through your inner Hebron toward your inner Shechem, asking, Are these parts well? Then affirm: I am all, and all is well; I act now to unite the inner flock and bring them to Dothan in abundance.
