Purging Idols, Awakening I Am
Genesis 35:2-4 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
Jacob orders purification and removal of foreign gods and to change their garments. They then prepare to go to Bethel, build an altar to the God who answered in distress, and surrender the idols by burying them.
Neville's Inner Vision
Take the scene as a map of consciousness. The 'strange gods' are beliefs that your mind has mistaken for power—doubt, fear, attachments, limits. Jacob’s household becomes your own inner state: remove the idols, get clean, and change your garments—the imagery of shedding a worn thought-form and dressing anew in a state of readiness to commune with the Divine I AM. Bethel is not a place on a map but the inner sanctuary where God answers you as you navigate distress. When they offer Jacob the strange gods and earrings, notice that you too can relinquish every belief foreign to your true nature and bury them beneath the oak of your subconscious, letting the old images stay hidden and out of sight. The act of arising and going up to Bethel is your decision to live by the certainty of awareness rather than by appearances. The altar you raise is your affirmation that the God who was with you on the road is the I AM within you, always present, always guiding the next step.
Practice This Now
Imaginative Act: Sit quietly, declare 'I AM' as your identity, and imagine removing every idol from your mind; visualize burying them under an oak and rising to Bethel to altar the God within.
