Inner Garden Awakening
Genesis 3:7-10 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read Genesis 3 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
Genesis 3:7-10 shows humanity awakening to self-awareness, discovering nakedness and fear, then hiding from the presence of God, who calls to return.
Neville's Inner Vision
Genesis 3:7-10 is not a history of persons apart from you but a map of inner states. The 'eyes opened' marks the moment you become aware you are a state of consciousness; 'they knew they were naked' signals the stripping away of the old coverings of belief and limitation. The fig leaves they sewed are the stories you wear to hide from the truth of your I AM. The garden represents your mind, and the 'cool of the day' is the gentle, ordinary presence of God moving through your thoughts. When they hid among the trees, it is your habit of avoidance when the inner movement of consciousness asks to be turned toward the light. The question 'Where art thou?' is the inside invitation to locate your current state and revise it. The confession 'I heard thy voice, and I was afraid' reveals fear arising from identification with a story rather than from reality. The cure is to return to the present presence by affirming your oneness with God, realizing you never left the garden. In that shift, you awaken to a new, fearless sense of self, fully alive in the I AM.
Practice This Now
Sit quietly and imagine the garden of your mind; hear the still voice say, 'Where art thou?' Answer, 'Here I am, in thy presence.' Then feel the fear melt as you affirm, 'I am that I AM,' and let the old coverings fall away.
