Genesis 28:20

Biblical Context

Jacob makes a vow promising loyalty and asking for God's presence on his journey. He seeks daily bread and clothing as outward signs of divine provision.

Neville's Inner Vision

Jacob’s vow is not a mere historical oath, but a picture of a state of consciousness. When he says, 'If God will be with me...', he lays out the trap of dependency on outside conditions for security. In Neville’s terms, 'God' is the I AM, the ever-present awareness by which you are. The scripture invites you to notice that true nourishment and dress come from the inner arrangement of mind, not from external luck. The conditional 'If God will be with me' becomes the key shift: realize that you can be with God now, by assuming the state of I AM and remaining there. The journey then becomes proof of your alignment—bread and raiment appear as consequences of being aware of your divine Presence. The vow is an inner commitment to stay in that consciousness as you move, trusting Providence and guidance. Your present moment is the place where this covenant manifests: you are the one who sustains the inner relationship with the Life that feeds and clothes you. Persist in this awareness and provision follows.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and silently repeat, 'I AM with me now.' Then imagine the scene as if you already possess bread and raiment, feeling the assurance that comes from inner presence.
