Biblical Context
Genesis 16:12 describes Ishmael as a wild man whose hand is against every man, yet he dwells among his brethren.
Neville's Inner Vision
In the inner theatre of your mind, Ishmael’s wildness represents a restless state of consciousness, a posture of separation that projects conflict outward. Scripture does not condemn the man, it invites you to witness how you imagine yourself in relation to others. The line “he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren” becomes a clue: you can choose to dwell in the presence of God—your I AM—within your own heart, thereby softening the sharp edges of fear and competition. When you refuse to identify with the clash, you revise the scene by assuming a state of unity and cooperation with all parts of yourself and with others. The trick is not to chase harmony in the world, but to feel it as already real inside you. As you persist in the feeling of oneness, the wild impulse loses its grip and your relationships reflect that inner harmony—showing that your world is a projection of your inner state.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and assume the feeling of unity with all your brethren; imagine you are dwelling in the presence of God within, and the 'wild' edge softens into cooperative living.
