Inner Proximity to Sodom

Genesis 13:12-13 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Genesis 13 in context

Scripture Focus

12Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.
13But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
Genesis 13:12-13

Biblical Context

Abram stays in Canaan while Lot dwells near Sodom; Lot’s proximity to a corrupt place hints at influence and trouble ahead. The verse contrasts inner alignment with outer attraction.

Neville's Inner Vision

Genesis 13:12-13 speaks in the language of consciousness, not geography. Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan—the stable, aware I AM you already inhabit. Lot pitched toward Sodom—the mind drawn toward appearances and appetites. The wickedness of Sodom’s people reveals the inner movements that accompany a life lived apart from the I AM. In Neville’s view, proximity to Sodom is a symbol of identifying with a belief system that fragments unity with God. When you fix your attention on the plain or its pleasures, you invite estrangement from the source of life within. The remedy is interior separation: declare the higher state as your ongoing perception, turn your tent toward the land of Canaan, and permit the I AM to guard your boundaries. As you revise your inner scene to align with your true nature, the city’s sway loses power and your consciousness returns to light, justice, and wholeness. Judgment, then, is not punishment but recognition of cause and effect within your own mind, reoriented toward harmony with God.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and revise the scene: see yourself as Abram in the land of Canaan, turn the tent away from Sodom. Feel the I AM encircling you, separating you from temptation and restoring your inner holiness.
