Genesis 11:2

Biblical Context

Genesis 11:2 describes people journeying from the east, discovering a plain in the land of Shinar, and settling there.

Neville's Inner Vision

I hear the line as a teacher of the mind. The east is the old state of separation and striving; the plain is a spacious inner field where you can inhabit unity. When you dwell there, you are truly dwelling in the I AM—the awareness that you are already complete. The story reframes a surface settlement as a settlement of your heart: a settled life with your neighbors and family, born of love and mutuality rather than conquest. The act of journeying and finding a plain is your inner movement toward a stable, inclusive community where the winds of fear or envy no longer govern you. In this state you recognize that every neighbor is your own reverent reflection, and the love of neighbor and family becomes your normal condition. As you persist in this inner dwelling, your external relationships shift to harmony, because your inner climate creates your outer life.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and assume you are already dwelling in the inner plain of unity with your neighbors and family; feel the shared life as if it is real now, and stay with that feeling for several minutes.
