The Word as Refuge
Exodus 9:20 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read Exodus 9 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
The verse records that those among Pharaoh’s servants who feared the LORD moved their servants and cattle into houses to protect them. This shows a spiritual obedience that alters outward life.
Neville's Inner Vision
Within every mind, the 'word of the LORD' is the call to align with the I AM that you are. The Pharaoh in you is the old state clinging to control—servants, habits, possessions—that still move outward in fear. When the inner word is heeded, those outward agents are drawn into safety by the recognition of a higher allegiance. To 'fear' the word is to obey it with fidelity; to 'flee into the houses' is to retreat from the open field of outer aims and shelter thoughts and things within the fortress of awareness. Your cattle and servants become signs of your desires, duties, and opinions; you withdraw them into the inner chamber where the light of consciousness can guide them without scattering your life. This is salvation: turning toward a stable inner state where your word is law. When you live by that word, you honor the covenant of your true self. The outer world conforms to the inward decree, and you are kept safe by the very act of obedience.
Practice This Now
Assume you fear and heed the Word within you. Then visualize your outward concerns—your tasks, worries, and possessions—drifting into a secure inner house as you rest in the certainty of that inner decree.
