Altar at the Inner Door
Exodus 40:6 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read Exodus 40 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
The verse shows an altar placed before the tabernacle's door, marking worship as a preparation through offering. It signals that true approach to God's presence begins at the threshold of consciousness.
Neville's Inner Vision
Viewed from the I AM within, Exodus 40:6 speaks not of a stone altar but of a state of consciousness set at the threshold of your temple. The altar of burnt offering represents the old, limiting thoughts, fears, and appetites you willingly place upon the fire of imagination. By setting that altar before the door of the tabernacle, you declare that no entering presence can remain unchallenged by your choice to sacrifice the lower self on the altar of divine intention. The door is your awareness; stepping through it is entering worship. Holiness and separation occur as you refuse to permit the ego’s demands to cross the threshold, keeping the sanctuary clear for the Presence of God, the I AM, to dwell in you. Obedience and faithfulness are continuous inner acts: you daily align your thoughts and feelings with the end you seek, you revise any state that contradicts that end, and you feel as if the promised state is already yours. In this light, true worship is an inward act of readiness, not a ritual performed apart from consciousness.
Practice This Now
Imaginative act: this morning, assume the feeling of the end and visualize standing before the door of your inner sanctuary; place on the altar a symbol of what you surrender (fear, doubt, limitation) and feel the release as the Presence steps in.
