Read Exodus 34 in context

Scripture Focus

29And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.
30And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him.
31And Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned unto him: and Moses talked with them.
32And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount Sinai.
33And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a vail on his face.
34But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the vail off, until he came out. And he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel that which he was commanded.
35And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face shone: and Moses put the vail upon his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

Biblical Context

Moses descends from Sinai with the radiant sign on his face, and the people fear. He speaks to them and then covers his face with a veil until he returns to God to receive further command.

Neville's Inner Vision

Imagine Moses as my own state of consciousness, a man who has gazed long upon the inner law and has become the living image of it. The skin of his face shining denotes the awareness that has been nourished by direct communion with God—the I AM that I am when I turn my attention inward. The veiling is not a secret of Moses alone; it is the natural habit of my outer self to shield the glory while speaking to others, to avoid frightening the sense-bound world with truth it cannot yet bear. When Moses enters the LORD's presence, the veil drops and the words come forth as commanded revelation; when I return to the people, the glow remains only as long as I stay anchored in God, yet I must veil again to address the world. In my practice, I treat my inner state as the sole reality and let outward appearances follow from it. The law I share with others is what I have already lived inwardly.

Practice This Now

Close your eyes and step into the LORD’s presence now; see your inner face glow. Say, I AM, and feel the radiance filling you, then allow the veil to fall in your daily dealings as you speak from that state.
