Biblical Context
Exodus 34:15-17 warns against forming covenants with the land's inhabitants lest you worship their gods. It also cautions that such ties lead your children to imitate those gods and to worship molten images.
Neville's Inner Vision
Within your being, the ‘inhabitants of the land’ are the prevailing ideas and desires that seize your attention. When you pledge yourself to these currents, you invite a whoring after their gods, for you bow to images of power, fear, or desire that pretend to govern your life. The command, “thou shalt make thee no molten gods,” becomes a call to guard against fixed pictures—idols that lock your consciousness into a single form. The covenant spoken of is not with distant people, but with the I AM within you—the unwavering awareness that you are the eternal presence here and now. To remain loyal is to practice separation in the sense of keeping your inner sanctuary clear of counterfeit powers. When you recognize that all outward gods are mere states of consciousness arising within you, you reclaim sovereignty and let your life be governed by the one true awareness that you already are.
Practice This Now
Practice: pause whenever a foreign belief or lure arises and assume, 'I am the I AM; no external power governs me.' Feel-it-real by breathing into your center and repeating, 'This idol is only a passing image; I remain the I AM.'
