Biblical Context
Everyone numbered must give a half-shekel to the LORD. The amount is the same for rich and poor, offered to make an atonement for souls.
Neville's Inner Vision
Within you the census is taken, not of bodies but of states of consciousness. The 'people numbered' are the thoughts you entertain, and the coins you count are the attention you devote to the I AM. The command that the rich shall not give more nor the poor less expresses a timeless truth: your spiritual offering is not wealth but surrender to your divine state. The half-shekel becomes a symbol for the exact portion of your senses you give to the sacred, a currency of gratitude that buys a shift from doubt to trust. When you offer, you are not paying a debt; you are renewing your covenant loyalty to the One. You choose to think as God thinks, to feel as God feels, to act from unity rather than separation. Atonement here is the restoration of conscious alignment with the I AM—the awareness that you are one with the source you worship. The outer rite thus reveals an inner discipline, showing your willingness to keep faith with your divine self.
Practice This Now
Imaginative act: Sit quiet, and assume you are the I AM. See yourself offering a half of your present sense of separation, and feel the oneness return as the offering is received within you.
