Biblical Context
Exodus 29:15-18 describes a ram brought to the altar, hands laid on its head, the animal slain, its blood sprinkled on the altar, its pieces washed, and the whole ram burned as a fragrant offering to the LORD. This ritual signifies cleansing, consecration, and wholehearted devotion.
Neville's Inner Vision
The ram is not a mere animal but a state of consciousness you identify with and then release. Laying hands on the head marks your acknowledgment that this impulse is yours and not separate from you. Slaying the ram and sprinkling its blood on the altar signify cleansing that energy and consecrating it to the I AM—the inner awareness that you are the ruler of your inner temple. Cutting the ram into pieces and washing the inward parts and legs represents disassembling the lower nature, exposing motive, and purifying it in the fire of realization. Burning the whole ram upon the altar is surrender: you release that entire state into the divine fire until its aroma—its effect in your life—becomes a sweet savour to your innermost self. The ritual invites a practical practice: assume the state of oneness, revise every thought to reflect it, and feel it real as the ongoing evidence of God within.
Practice This Now
Practice: sit quietly, place your hand on your chest as if laying hands on the inner ram, and repeat, 'I am the I AM; the old self is burned away by divine fire,' then feel the aroma of this new state filling your life.
