Biblical Context
The cherubim spread their wings over the mercy seat atop the ark, and God promises to meet and commune there from between them, with the testimony held inside. It is a meeting point of divine presence and covenant instruction.
Neville's Inner Vision
Picture the ark as the living center of your consciousness. The mercy seat rests above the inner order you keep—the 'testimony' you have accepted as true in your heart. The cherubim are not distant beings but the two poles of your attention: one eye on action, the other on feeling; their wings shade the seat and keep distractions at bay, while their faces look toward the center, declaring unity in purpose. When you acknowledge that God meets you there, you are recognizing that the I AM—the awareness that you ARE—speaks from between these two forces. The commandment you hold is the living memory of your covenant: what you refuse to imagine about yourself, and to what you consent. The encounter is a present tense event you can enter at any moment by assuming the state of communion now. In this inner temple, holiness is not separation from life but the clarity that allows mercy to flow—toward yourself and toward others—through your abiding loyalty to the I AM.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and, within, assume you are already in dialogue with God at the mercy seat. Feel the I AM presence settle in the center and hear the response as a quiet, sure impression.
