Biblical Context
God invites Moses to ascend the mountain to receive stone tablets, a law, and commandments. Moses goes up with Joshua, while the elders stay below; a cloud covers the mount and the glory of the Lord appears as devouring fire, and Moses remains with God for forty days and nights.
Neville's Inner Vision
On the inner scale, this scene is your ascent of consciousness. The mount Sinai is the inner mountain where you withdraw attention from the outward world and fix it on the I AM. The tables of stone and the law represent the immutable truths you have decided to accept as your own; when you state them inwardly, they become the commandments by which your life flows. Moses going up—with Joshua as support—symbolizes your courage and the faith companion that helps you carry the new state into being. The elders staying behind, with Aaron and Hur, reflect those old habits and identifications you leave beneath while you rise to hear the voice that calls you to discipline and loyalty to the covenant with God within. The cloud covering the mount and the glory of the Lord appearing as devouring fire describe the presence of the I AM lighting your entire being, burning away doubt and sense of separation. Forty days and nights is a symbolic period of inner consecration, during which you dwell in the new state until it becomes your demonstrable reality.
Practice This Now
Assume you are already on the inner mount and declare 'I AM' as your constant. See the law inscribed on stone tablets of your heart and dwell there until your outer world reflects that truth.
