Biblical Context
Exodus 20:26 warns not to ascend to the altar by external steps, so that one’s nakedness—symbolic ego and unhidden motives—remains concealed. It calls worship to be inward, modest, and pure.
Neville's Inner Vision
Think of the altar as the inner sanctuary of my awareness, not a platform for outward ascent. To go up by steps is to lean on ritual ladders, status, or display; such ascent reveals the nakedness of the ego—the hidden beliefs I would rather not face in quiet. When I approach the altar from within, I do not expose myself to be seen, but align with the I AM, the one indivisible consciousness that is already complete. Nakedness here is the ego uncovered in the light of assumption; the remedy is humility, discretion, and candor in the presence of God within. True worship is not enacted at the edge of a platform but in the stillness of inner recognition. As I revise my posture inward, I feel the truth: I am the presence that cannot be seen by others yet is everywhere; I am clothed with the robe of being, and no external ladder can add to what I already am. The outward ritual loses its urgency when my inner state remains pure and obedient to the I AM.
Practice This Now
Assume the stance: I ascend only in consciousness. Feel the I AM now, and sense your inner altar as already pure, beneath any outward ritual.
