Ephesians 5:18-19

Biblical Context

The verse instructs not to be drunk with wine but to be filled with the Spirit, and to speak to oneself in psalms and spiritual songs in the heart.

Neville's Inner Vision

All scriptural invitations are inward calls. Wine is but a symbol of a distracted psyche; be not drunk, but be filled with the Spirit, which is the growing awareness of the I AM within. The Spirit is your own inner life becoming vivid to you, a state of consciousness in which you dwell as the true you. When you 'speak to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs,' you are not commanding others; you are conversing with yourself—your inner atmosphere, your present mood. These songs are not merely sounds but the tonal quality of your awareness; they rise from the heart and magnetize the condition of your life. To be filled with the Spirit is to yield your attention to the present mood of God within you, and to let it govern thoughts, feelings, and imagination. Your world reflects the state you habitually assume; thus, when you assume the feeling of being perpetually joyful and grateful, the exterior experiences align. The practice of living in this state is a continual revision of self into the I AM that you are.

Practice This Now

Imaginatively declare and feel, 'I am Spirit-filled now'; sit quietly, let your heart sing inwardly, and dwell in the I AM for several minutes, until the sense of being one with the divine inner song feels real.
