Quiet Speech, Wise Vows

Ecclesiastes 5:1-7 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Ecclesiastes 5 in context

Scripture Focus

1Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.
2Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.
3For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words.
4When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.
5Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.
6Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?
7For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.
Ecclesiastes 5:1-7

Biblical Context

Ecclesiastes 5:1–7 counsels approaching God with reverent restraint: listen before you speak and guard your promises. It warns that many words breed vanities and dull the inner reverence.

Neville's Inner Vision

Approach the house of God as your own consciousness, the I AM you awaken within. To keep thy foot is to guard the path of awareness, not rushing the lungs of expression before the still, small voice within. Be not rash with thy mouth; when God is in heaven and you are on earth, let your words be few, for language can jumble your purpose and scatter your energy. The dream comes through the multitude of business, and a fool's voice is known by its many words; therefore, still the mind and dwell in the one state you desire to see formed. When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; live as though the vow is already fulfilled, feeling its reality, and align your acts with that end. Better is it not to vow than to vow and not pay, for inconsistency cuts against the fabric of your inner image. Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; guard your speech so you do not stand against your own achievement. Fear thou God—let reverent awareness govern your inner world, and watch the outer world respond to the discipline of your I AM.

Practice This Now

Imaginative_act: Sit quietly, presume you are already in the calm presence of the I AM, and revise one current worry into a completed result as you breathe. Then feel the truth of that completed end and let it color your next spoken word.
