Scripture Focus

21Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
Ecclesiastes 3:21

Biblical Context

Ecclesiastes 3:21 contrasts the upward-moving spirit of man with the downward pull of beastly impulses, inviting us to discern which governs our inner life.

Neville's Inner Vision

Within you, the word spirit refers not to a distant sky but to your state of awareness. The spirit of man that goeth upward is the upward orbit of consciousness, the I AM that chooses what reality to inhabit. The spirit of the beast that goeth downward is the pull of habit, appetite, fear, and the gravity toward the appearances of matter. Solomon asks who knows which moves govern you; the answer is found not in external omens but in your present state of consciousness. When you dwell in the assumption that you are the I AM, that you are the one who can revise any situation by imagination, you cause the ascent. The world becomes a mirror of your inner life, and Providence appears as the alignment of your inner state with your desired end. This is truth and faithfulness: to notice which spirit rules and to shift with a simple revision until the ascent feels natural.

Practice This Now

Assume the I AM as the upward-spirit: revise a current situation from that beingness, and feel it real for five minutes as though the ascent has already occurred.
