The Inner Commandments Of Deuteronomy
Deuteronomy 5:17-21 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read Deuteronomy 5 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
The passage lists prohibitions—kill, adultery, theft, false witness, and coveting—establishing simple, universal boundaries for neighbors to live in harmony.
Neville's Inner Vision
Within the I AM, these commandments are not external edicts but inner laws inscribed on the canvas of your consciousness. To 'kill' is to extinguish life from possibility in yourself or another through fear-filled or coercive thoughts; to 'covet' is to plant a belief in lack that divides you from the one Life. When you bear false witness, you craft stories that fragment your awareness and betray truth. The neighbor's wife, field, or goods are outer images of inner dispositions—desire, envy, control—so the law compels you to watch your interior kingdom. By honoring these boundaries you are not obeying a rule but aligning with the one Life within you. The commandments reveal that true love of neighbor arises when your own inner climate is unbroken by fear, possessiveness, or judgment. As you inhabit the I AM, your world-forming imagination becomes a conduit of unity rather than division. In this light, the social order you experience reflects your inner order, and a steadfast interior life draws forth harmony and truth among all.
Practice This Now
Sit quietly and repeat, 'I am the I AM; I choose life, not harm, and I release all envy toward my neighbor's possessions.' Feel that you lack nothing and that others' good is your own consciousness expanding.
