Verse 3–4 narrate presenting yourself to the priest and confessing that you have entered the land God promised to your ancestors. The basket of your offerings is then set before the altar, signifying obedience and gratitude.
Neville's Inner Vision
In the Neville reading, the 'country' is not a geography but a state of consciousness you enter by conscious faith. The priest represents the inner authority of the I AM, the awareness that recognizes and names your assumption. When you say, I profess this day unto the LORD thy God, that I am come unto the country..., you are not speaking of a distant land but of the inner condition you assume to be true here and now. The basket is your thoughts, deeds, and mood—what you offer to the altar of your own God-presence. The altar stands for the fixed point of attention, the spot in consciousness where all your offerings are tendered and recognized. As you place the basket before the altar, you are aligning your inner movements with your acknowledged state. The act of 'coming to the country' becomes a ruling idea: you live as the I AM, and reality follows the law of consciousness. Faithfulness and obedience become inner habits, not external ritual; you prove them by dwelling in the present certainty of your promised land.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and assume the state you seek as already yours: you are in the inner promised land. Present mentally a basket of your thoughts and intentions to your inner priest at the altar, and feel the acceptance of your covenant now.
