In the Neville Goddard key, the 'field' is your present mental atmosphere, and the 'betrothed damsel' is your cherished dream you have pledged to fulfill. The 'man' that forces her is the old, coerced habit of reaction—an impractical thought that would seize your desire by force. The decree that the man dies is the inner law that the old conditioning must be uprooted so the dream can stand free. When it says the damsel cried in the field and there was none to save her, it whisper that in your present state, your true need cannot be rescued by any outer authority; salvation comes from within your own I AM, the awareness that sustains the dream. The line that ‘there is in the damsel no sin worthy of death’ declares your innocent, uncondemned desire; you are not guilty for desiring what you imagine you deserve. Thus the outer judgment shadows your feeling, not the truth; the only penalty is the death of an old determinant that denies the dream. In practice, you must reaffirm that your assumption of the wish is already accomplished by your inner law.
