Presumption, Law, and Inner Discipline

Deuteronomy 17:12-13 - A Neville Goddard interpretation

Read Deuteronomy 17 in context

Scripture Focus

12And the man that will do presumptuously, and will not hearken unto the priest that standeth to minister there before the LORD thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.
13And all the people shall hear, and fear, and do no more presumptuously.
Deuteronomy 17:12-13

Biblical Context

The passage establishes that arrogant defiance of sacred authority is deadly. It calls the people to hear, fear, and abandon presumptuous behavior.

Neville's Inner Vision

Think of the death spoken of in the text not as punishment from a distant deity but as the ending of the old, self-willed you. The 'man' who acts presumptuously stands in as a state of consciousness that refuses the guidance of inner authority. The priest 'standing to minister' and the judge represent your inner I AM—the discernment and corrective force that speaks when you listen. To hearken is to align with that inner order; to refuse is to cling to a separate self and invite inner chaos. To 'put away the evil from Israel' becomes clearing your mental nation of pride and illusion, making room for holiness in thought. When you yield to the inner priest and obey the judge, fear arises briefly as your awareness shifts; this fear is the sign that old associations are dissolving and you are returning to unity with your divine self. As you live from this inner alignment, the mind that hears and obeys becomes contagious within your whole being, and presumptuousness loses its claim over your life.

Practice This Now

Imaginative act: Sit in quiet stillness and envision the inner priest and inner judge standing within you, listening for their guidance. Revise any arrogant thought by affirming, 'I am led by the I AM,' and feel the certainty as alignment takes hold.
