Biblical Context
Colossians 3:5-11 urges mortifying the earthly, disordered patterns and putting off the old self; then it invites you to put on the new, renewed in knowledge after the image of the Creator. It declares unity in Christ, transcending old identity markers.
Neville's Inner Vision
To Neville, 'mortify' is not punishment but a shifting of attention: your 'members' are the thoughts, desires, and habits you continually feed. The 'earth' is the self absorbed in separate aims. Cease energizing those impulses and you disarm the power they hold; instead, turn to the I AM within and choose the new man, renewed in knowledge after the image of the Creator. In this inner transformation, divisions vanish—there is no Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, Barbarian or Scythian, bond or free—because Christ is all and in all. The wrath spoken of arises when you cling to separation; release that stance and align with the life that animates all. The shift occurs in consciousness: you awaken to the truth that you are the image of God, living now as the renewed mind, expressing holiness, purity, and integrity through love.
Practice This Now
Imitate the new man now: when irritation arises, close your eyes and declare, I am the image of God renewed; feel the calm rise, and respond with steady, compassionate words.
