The verse declares that the one who tends the inner field must first taste its fruit, implying that fruitfulness follows faithful exertion.
Neville's Inner Vision
In the realm of consciousness, you are the husbandman cultivating your inner garden with attention and faith. Labor is not toil for nothing, but a turning of your inward soil—the repeated inner movements of desire, belief, and the feeling of its now accomplished. The fruits you seek are inner states—provision, steadiness, joy—that come as you permit the I AM, your true self, to partake of your labor. When you “labor,” you are not paying a debt to time; you are aligning your inner state with the reality you desire. The first taste of the harvest occurs within; you must claim it there before any outward sign appears. Therefore, if you desire wealth, health, or harmony, assume the feeling of the accomplished result; stand in that mood until it becomes your habitual sense of self. You are the gardener of your creation, and your consciousness is the soil; as you drink in the fruits within, the outer fruits follow in due season.
Practice This Now
Imaginative act: Sit quietly, envision your inner garden flourishing; assume the feeling of first fruits now. Say, 'I have now partaken of the fruits of my labor,' and let that sensation sink into your I AM.
