Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
God comforts us in all our tribulations so we can comfort others in trouble. Our sufferings bring consolation, and whether afflicted or comforted, it serves others' consolation and salvation.
Neville's Inner Vision
Verse 4–6 speaks to the inner economy of being. Comfort is not a reward handed down from without but a state of awareness that you awaken within. You are not merely passing through tribulation; you are being taught to inhabit the I AM—the divine, unchanging you that can comfort and be comforted at once. When you acknowledge that the comfort you feel is your own inner Christ—the Christ within—you enlarge your capacity to console others by example and stillness. The 'sufferings of Christ' become the raw material that purifies your perception, so that your consolation can abound by the same Christ in you. If you are afflicted, hold in mind that this endurance is working salvation for others by showing them a way through their own distress; if you are comforted, recognize it as nourishment you now grant to them. By maintaining the inner state of peace, you do not merely endure; you fulfill the law of consciousness that converts pain into compassionate power and turns tribulation into redemption for all involved.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and assume the I AM is comforting you now. Then picture yourself quietly comforting another in trouble with that same inner peace.
