Biblical Context
The verse describes a ruler in Judah who built high places to worship other gods, thereby provoking the LORD God of his fathers.
Neville's Inner Vision
Within you, the 'cities of Judah' symbolize the distinct realms of your thinking—the habits, memories, and desires that govern your sense of self. The 'high places' are the entrenched beliefs and images you still worship as if they were real rulers over you. When you entertain allegiance to fears, appetites, or reputations, you erect idols that split your life, inviting inner discord and anger from the I AM within. Neville’s method shifts the focus from external history to inner awareness: the only true altar is the I AM, the divine self-aware presence that is always there. By assuming the I AM resides in every city of your mind, and by revising every idol into its nothingness, you dissolve false worship. Obedience, in this sense, means living from the one sovereign ruler—the I AM—until your inner life and outer conditions reflect that unity and harmony.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes for a few minutes and declare: I AM is the only God in every city of my mind. Revise every idol into its nothingness and feel the awareness stand sovereign in all my thoughts and acts.
