Biblical Context
The passage chronicles Ahaziah's brief, troubled reign under Athaliah's influence, the purge of the royal line by Jehu, Athaliah's attempt to destroy the royal seed, and Joash's hidden preservation in the temple for six years.
Neville's Inner Vision
In the Neville lens, these kings and queens are pictures of our states of consciousness. Ahaziah’s brief reign stands for a short-lived, insecure rule born of alignment with the old, fear-soaked patterns—the 'house of Ahab' that dominates when the mind yields to counsels of destruction. Athaliah, the mother of the king, embodies the stubborn emotional pull that would wipe out the seeds of true being when we neglect covenant loyalty to the I AM. Jehu’s judgment upon the house of Ahab is the inward act of consciousness that arises when the desire for truth becomes stronger than habit, sweeping away what no longer serves. The removal of Ahaziah and the slaying of his seed represent the shedding of false lineages of thought, while Jehoshabeath’s act of hiding Joash mirrors the silent, protecting work of Spirit in the temple of God, where the true self is nurtured out of sight. Six years of hiding signify a period of inner cultivation before the new king can be revealed to the world. In this light, the chapter invites us to trust the inner process where the I AM quietly prepares a sovereign self that will reign in the heart.
Practice This Now
Imaginative_act: Assume the I AM is king in your mind now. Revise the scene by declaring, 'I am the King of this consciousness,' and feel it real as the hidden Joash rises to reign.
