1 Thessalonians 1:5-6

Biblical Context

Paul says the gospel came not only in words but with power, in the Holy Spirit, and with strong assurance; the listeners became followers of us and of the Lord despite afflictions.

Neville's Inner Vision

Within this text the gospel is not a public speech; it is a state of consciousness made flesh. The power and Holy Ghost are the inner energies of awareness that animate your word when you accept it as true of you. The much assurance is the unwavering conviction that the state you desire is already seated within you. When the Thessalonians became followers of us and of the Lord, they symbolize the self you recognize as your higher self, one who imitates the calm, confident presence you see in your inner teacher. The line about receiving the word in affliction with joy shows that trials are not external proofs but inner resistances dissolving as you dwell in the desired state. The presence of power and joy of the Holy Ghost means your imagination, applied with persistence, changes your outer circumstances by changing your inner atmosphere. In Neville's view the gospel is always present: you need only assume it as your current reality, feel it as if it is done, and it becomes your living experience.

Practice This Now

Imaginative act: Sit quietly and state that the gospel power is within you now; feel the Holy Spirit as your life force. Revise any sense of lack by dwelling in the feeling of the fulfilled state until it feels real.
