Saul’s scene is a study in a divided mind. The “woman” and the act of calling up Samuel are not an event in history but an image of Saul’s habit of seeking certainty outside himself. He has banished familiar spirits, yet his fear compels him to try one more time to pierce the future by external means. When he swears by the LORD that no punishment will come to her, he is enforcing a contract within his own consciousness: a bargain that protection comes only through outward signs and authority. In Neville’s terms, the true I AM is present in the room even as the oracle speaks, and the oracle is but the clear memory that the mind’s state determines what seems to happen. The moment Saul relies on an oath and on ritual to secure safety, he reveals that he believes his future depends on external validation. The cure is a revision: recognize that the inner state—the awareness that I am, that God is within—already contains the answer, and that fear of punishment is a product of misaligned imagination. When you align with the I AM and refuse to bargain with doom, you hear the inner voice that guides you without the need of mediums or tables.
