The Inner Covenant Arrows
1 Samuel 20:35-40 - A Neville Goddard interpretation
Read 1 Samuel 20 in context
Scripture Focus
Biblical Context
In the morning, Jonathan and a young helper go into a field, and Jonathan shoots arrows as a coded sign to David. The lad retrieves them and returns, while only Jonathan and David understand the plan.
Neville's Inner Vision
Jonathan and David symbolize inner states of loyalty and faith within your consciousness. The field is your current posture of awareness; the arrows are the movements of intention that point you toward your true goal. When Jonathan tells the lad to run and fetch arrows beyond him, he reveals that the next step lies beyond the ordinary scene—the arrow beyond thee. The boy’s ignorance mirrors the outer mind that cannot grasp the hidden covenant between your higher self (Jonathan) and your true desire (David). Only the inner powers know the matter, and only they must execute it: send the inner sign into expression, carry your means into outward form, and let your plan emerge in the city of your life. The ritual is a covenant with God within: a faithful decision in the I AM that you will move toward your goal without hesitation. When you align with that state, the sign becomes real in your world and your actions reflect it. Trust the unseen arrangement, and feel the certainty as a living, guiding force.
Practice This Now
Close your eyes and assume the Jonathan-state, delivering a clear inner signal to your David that the next move lies beyond fear. Feel the certainty of the plan as already carried into your outer world, and act as if the arrows have found their mark.
